Missing the Sign

Some motorists are still driving across the McLaughlin Run Road bridge despite being closed.

and some motorists are having trouble coming to terms with the detour.

Bridgeville police officers on Sunday wrote seven citations to people who moved the closure sign and then drove across the bridge.

An officer stationed himself in the area Sunday to monitor traffic after the state Department of Transportation closed the bridge April 6 to make extensive improvements on the span.

Police Chief Chad King said one woman got out of her car, walked across the bridge to see if it was safe and then drove across. Some people who moved the sign did not put it back, which could have led to confusion for other motorists, King said during Monday night’s borough council meeting.

“In some cases, they never moved it back,” King said. “So it was wide enough to go through.”

Some residents complained at the meeting that many tractor-trailer drivers do not know where exactly the road is closed, so they eventually become stuck near the bridge and have to turn around. King said he will talk to PennDOT about adjusting the sign locations so people are not confused.

He added that police are still monitoring  to detour around the closure. Initial work on utilities around the bridge is expected to begin next week.
