Lightning Strike Damages Upper St. Clair Church

No one was hurt when lightning struck a steeple on Westminster Presbyterian Church on Monday afternoon.

A lightning strike caused damage to the in Upper St. Clair on Monday afternoon.

The small steeple was struck sometime after 2 p.m.

"You heard the crack of thunder and you just knew something was wrong," said Dave Reiter, the church's business administrator. "Thankfully no one was hurt. And thankfully it was the small steeple and not the large steeple."

The lightning strike put a hole in the roof and blew out a number of the steeple windows. It caused no interior damage.

The responded to the call. There was no fire, but according to Reiter, "some pieces of wood were smoldering just a little bit."

Reiter was reporting the incident to the church's insurance company. It is unclear how much the repairs will cost.
