Judge to Students: National Weed Day Is 'Blatantly Illegal'

April 20, or 4/20, is known among marijuana users as National Pot Smoking Day or National Weed Day— a day to celebrate and smoke marijuana in defiance of the law and authorities.

Some students in have been talking about the "wake and bake" day on Twitter—even posting pictures of the high school menu for April 20, noting it has more food items on it than other days.

Superintendent Patrick O'Toole said there are no special plans in place beyond the 's standard vigilance to prevent anyone coming to school "high" on Friday.

"We have strong policies in place and our students are aware of the rules and consequences," he said.

District Judge Robert Wyda said no students have come before him in court on April 20 in past years and hopes to see no problems on Friday.

"It's (National Pot Smoking Day) blatantly illegal and shows contemptuous defiance for the law," he said.

Although more and more people seem to be advocating for the legalization of marijuana or medicinal marijuana, Judge Wyda said his experience makes him have an opposite conclusion.

"I still see many heroin addicts and their families who say that marijuana is a gateway drug," he said. "I can't ignore that."
