Senator Liz Cheney? God Help Us!

Recently provided a warm reception at The White House was former President George H. W. Bush, well known for his oft-stated desire to make ours a "kinder, gentler nation".  We will become a more harsh, rough nation if Liz Cheney is successful in her to bid to unseat Wyoming U. S. Senator Mike Enzi in what is sure to be a contentious, ugly, divisive election.

Miss Cheney has long been making the rounds of news and opinion television shows to defend "dear old Dad", not that the mean-spirited, bombastic "Vice" needs anyone to stand up for him. Let us recall that it was Mr. Cheney, the man that occupied the exalted office of Vice-President that went to the floor of the Senate to tell a distinguished political foe, "Go ---- yourself". He has adopted the unorthodox view that it is the place of a former vice-president of the opposing party to publicly tear down the current occupant of the Oval Office at every opportunity.  Cheney makes President George W. Bush look like an honorable gentleman by comparison, as Mr. Bush has appropriately stated that President Obama "deserves my silence".

It is reasonable to conclude that a Senator Liz Cheney would be an advocate for more guns, more unnecessary wars, one who like Dad, believes that deficits don't matter so long as the president is a Republican, and that she would bring an even greater lack of comity and cooperation in this once-august body.

I do foresee one compassionate plank in Miss Cheney's platform, an appreciation for the rights and dignity of gay Americans like her sister.   Who thinks the Cheneys would support such rights were it not for their personal involvement in the matter?  Learning that a family member or friend is gay is what has recently been bringing converts to the side of ending discrimination based on sexual orientation.

I hope the people of Wyoming are sufficiently smart and decent to conclude that one Cheney wrecking ball in national governance was enough.

Liz Cheney would be a worthy successor to her father on the national political scene.  I do not mean that statement as a compliment.
