Music That Poisons the Culture

In the 27 August Wall Street Journal, distinguished veteran journalist Juan Williams compares the music of the era of the Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream" speech with the hip-hop/rap slop that exists today, and he rightfully condemns civil rights leaders for tacit acceptance of it.  I wholeheartedly concur.

I enjoy many of the stations which I receive as part of the Siurius/XM package to which I subscribe.  Along with quality programming, the company airs "XL Backspin", which is obviously targeted to the violent, the hateful, and those that consider women to be second-class citizens.  On "Backspin", women are referred to as "bitches" and "hoes", and law enforcement authorities are the enemy.  The lyrics of many songs played on this station could not be included in a forum enjoyed by civilized human beings.  Suffice it to say that one of the popular songs played on "Backspin" is "F--- The Police".

The naive view is to say, "You do not have to listen to Backspin.  Change the channel and do not worry about it."  If only it were so easy.  Stations like this have influence on the impressionable and we see the result in our society becoming more coarse, crude, violent, and profane.
