Governor Jan Brewer Strikes Against Intolerance and Discrimination: Bravo!

For whatever the reason or reasons that she did it, I commend Arizona Governor Jan Brewer for vetoing the mean-spirited legislation which would have enabled merchants and service providers to turn away gay men and women if they could cite a "sincerely held" religious objection.
This bill should have sent a chill down the spine not only of those who would be directly affected, but of all Americans who believe in equality and fair play. One need not be an advocate of gay marriage to recognize the danger inherent in a bill would set the stage for the marginalizing of a large segment of our population, men and women who have done nothing wrong.  Had the bill been signed into law, it would not only have hurled a part of our nation back to the ugly pre-civil rights era, but would have had a devastating economic effect on the economy of Arizona and its reputation.
I hope that the governor acted primarily out of principle and decency, but she has done the right thing and is deserving of commendation for courageously standing up to the forces of "holier than thou" intolerance.
