The fired Los Angeles police officer who has apparently gone on a killing spree targeting law enforcement officials and their families could not have been aided and abetted any more magnificently than he has by the media. News and news analysis programs have featured and focused on him; multiple photographs of him have been plastered across television screens and throughout newspapers as we examine the details of his life and mindset rather than focusing on his victims. His “manifesto” has been published, thus the nation now knows the details of his complex and bizarre grievances against civilized society and his plan to kill as many as those that he hates as possible. What more could he have possibly hoped to accomplish than what he has, something which he could not have done without a lot of help?
Imagine the encouragement other callous, psychopathic potential murderers are likely to derive from the extent to which this individual has been magnified and aggrandized by media outlets that have played right into the California killer’s hands.
Is the media in existence to serve the community or to encourage homicide? Is there no duty to act responsibly?
