Singapore Modesty Laws Come to Bear on A User of Profanity

Singapore Applies a Standard of Modesty and Decency not Seen Here in Decades

Media outlets have carried a recent story about an Australian man who flew from that country to Singapore. En route, he became involved in an argument with a fellow passenger and directed profanity at the individual.

The abusive passenger was met upon landing by Singapore police because his language was a violation of a Singapore modesty law which was in effect on the airliner, the penalty for which is imprisonment and/or caning.

I somehow suspect that if a similar law were enacted here, that the American Civil Liberties Union would have something to say about it. I am not going to endorse a prison sentence or physical punishment for those that are coarse, crude, and vile, but I like the spirit of those in authority in Singapore, who have taken some action to ensure a society of civility and respect, something which long ago was sacrificed on the altar of free speech in the United States.

This "altar of free speech" is what enables you to post your diatribes, Oren. This "altar of free speech" is what makes this country so great! if you don't like it, move to Singapore!

I would much rather live in a society that may lack civility and respect than in a society that lives with the fear that it's government will punish them for offending someone.
Don't take for granted the little liberty we have left just because you disagree with how some decide to use their freedoms.

The Bible makes it very clear what Christ's expectations are for Christians surrounding gambling andRead More games of chance. Bingo and a Raffle should strike many as surprising events/activities for a church sponsored event. The 'MoreFest' is a wonderful event to provide a family friendly Christian atmosphere for the community. Sadly, the activities themselves send a mixed message, further confusing non-believers who prefer to frame Christians as hypocrites rather than fallible humans who are saved because the choose to believe.

Why is this youth field hockey program just for GIRLS?!? Field hockey is one of the oldest spors onRead More the planet dating back 5000 years but wasn't played by women until about two hundred years ago. gender bias in field hockey in the USA is killing our women's team. They finish dead last in the 2012 Olympics and came from the only country in the competition with less men playing in your country than any of the other team
