A Courageous Leader - D. C. Mayor Vincent Gray!

Three cheers for Washington D. C. Mayor Vincent Gray!  A Democrat in an overwhelmingly liberal Democratic city, the mayor did the courageous and right thing in vetoing the Large Retailer Accountability Act (i. e., the “We Hate Walmart” bill), which would have increased the minimum wage in the district to $12.50 per hour, but only for certain large stores. (Thankfully, the D. C. Council was not able to muster enough votes to override the mayor's wise action.)

Though the mayor was under enormous pressure from his constituency to sign the legislation, he recognized that it would cause job loss and squelch job growth that “big box” retailers like Wal-Mart have planned to bring to the area in this era of a sagging economy.

Wal-Mart had threatened to renege on its pledge to build three new D. C. stores if the legislation passed.  Did anything think it was bluffing?

Once in a while, an elected official acts for the public good,in this case saying no to the vocal activists that know nothing about the realities of economics.  It is a proud moment for the District and for Vincent Gray, a leader.
