But more importantly, it left the U.S. Navy veteran's family without its husband and father.
Both of Judge Wyda's children are still enrolled in college—his son, Jared, at Allegheny for one more year and his daughter, Rachel, at Vanderbilt for four.
To help to offset the cost of higher education for the Wyda children and to kickstart scholarship funds for children in Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair going forward, a group of volunteers is organizing the first Robert C. Wyda Memorial Golf Outing for this coming October.
After Jared and Rachel receive proceeds from the first outing, organizers hope to run the event annually to sponsor two college scholarships per year—one for an Upper St. Clair student and another for a Bethel student.
This year's event will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, at Lindenwood Golf Club, 360 Galley Rd., North Strabane Township, PA 15317, starting with a noon tee-off.
The cost to participate varies—see below—and organizers will accept entries up until the day of the event. Though, participants are asked to schedule as early as possible, especially advertisers.
- Gold ($800) - foursome golf, dinner, tee sponsorship, full-page advertisement in the event program and golf cart signage
