USC Beats Gateway, 3-0

Carley Bogan scores two and Sammi Witsberger one in dominant performance.

The USC girls soccer team dominated the Post Gazette's #5 ranked team, Gateway, and won 3-0.

The Panthers scored all three goals in the first half. USC dominated in goal, on defense, in midfield, and up top, in a big win at a tournament of non-section games at Hampton.

Sammi Witsberger scored the first goal with 15 minutes left in the first half from a perfect pass from Hannah Wilhelm. Wilhelm precisely placed the ball over the Gateway defense at the 20-yard line, Witsberger collected the pass, dribbled in, and put the ball by the keeper. The Panther offense looked extremely sharp Saturday night. Only 2:30 minutes later, defender Sami Lackner fired in a hard, long-range shot that the deflected off the keeper, Carley Bogan collected the deflection and beat the keeper to score the Panthers second goal. With four minutes remaining in the half, Bogan beat the keeper again with Ellie DiNardo recording the assist.

In the second half, the Panthers were even more dominant, but did not score.  Jocelyn Alfera had at least three great saves throughout the game to preserve the shutout.

The win raises the Panthers record to 12-1 overall and 9-1 in the section. USC will win section if they can win their next two games, Monday (Oct. 10) at Chartiers Valley and on Wednesday (Oct. 12) in the biggest game of the year; a home game against Moon—the only team to beat them this year. The Panthers will be looking to revenge that loss and win Class AAA Section 5.
