St. Clair Beats Norwin 1-0, Advances to Quarterfinals

The win qualifies USC for the state tournament.

The USC girls soccer team defeated Norwin 1-0 on Wednesday night to extend their playoff run.

The Panthers play North Allegheny on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at a time and place to be determined. The current Class AAA WPIAL playoff bracket can be viewed here.

The Panthers started fast, dominating right from the kick off. They scored only three minutes and 36 seconds into the game. Senior midfielder Hannah Wilhelm took the ball down the left side of the field and centered to senior midfielder Hannah Zangara who headed the ball past the Norwin keeper.

It turned out that this was all the Panthers would need. Later in the first half, Norwin had a good scoring chance when—after a shot rebounded off the crossbar—a player following the shot missed the rebound to the left of the goal. Again the Panthers showed good ball possession and was quicker to the ball all night long. A great effort by a great team.

The win also qualifies the Panthers to play in the PIAA tournament (along with the three other WPIAL quarterfinalists, Peters, Penn-Trafford and North Allegheny, as well as the winner of the city league, either Allderdice and Obama Academy).
