Pet Therapy Training Classes

As an extension of Westminster's Pet Ministry, and in conjunction with the Care Ministry at Westminster, we are offering training classes in the hopes of certifying dogs so that their owners can take them to visit shut-ins, residents in nursing homes or assisted living communities, or anyone else who could benefit from the therapeutic effects that only a pet can bring sometimes.

Pet therapy training classes are for the dog that already knows basic obedience commands—sit, down, come, stay—and they should be able to perform these commands without a lure or treat in various situations. Dogs should also be able to walk nicely on leash without the aid of training equipment such as a gentle leader or a no-pull harness. All steps of both testing processes will be covered during the four-week class, but teaching new commands will be very limited.

All dogs should be current on vaccinations and people and dog friendly. Therapy dog testing requirements can be found by visiting the Therapy Dog International website.
