Viewfinder: A Late-Season Snowfall

The view around town during a late-season snow storm in Upper St. Clair.

It's not every year the National Weather Service issues a winter storm warning in March. The dipping temperatures turned Thursday's heavy rain into snow.

"The snow is kind of a blessing," public works director George Kostelich said, "Because we didn't need anymore rain."

Upper St. Clair saw one and a quarter inches of rain on Thursday, which set a new record for rainfall on March 10.

"Most of the snow didn't stick," Kostelich said. "We had more issues with the rain."

The public works crews salted once in the morning. Kostelich said they are in good shape with materials; they're always prepared for snow in March after the blizzard hit in 1993.

The Upper St. Clair school district issued no school delays or closings, although a half day was already planned for students.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for Allegheny County. Meteorologists said a band of light snow is moving across the region, which is reducing visibility below one mile. Snow accumulation will be an inch or less in most locations.
