Upper St. Clair Prepares for Winter Storm

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for and most of southwestern Pennsylvania Friday night.

The warning goes into effect at 7 p.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Our forecast says we'll get two to four inches of snow by noon tomorrow. That doesn't scare us. Our concern is if we get a period of freezing rain or ice that would build up," said George Kostelich, director.

Crews were out Thursday night and early Friday morning pre-treating the roads. All equipment is in good condition and there is plenty of material available because of the unusually warm December and early January.

Kostelich said his men are getting rest Friday afternoon, and expects the snow will start falling between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The crews will focus on keeping the roads clear around the due to its evening activities.

"If your evening activities end prior to 8 p.m., drivers shouldn't see any problems. Any travel after 8 p.m. could be dicey," he said.

By Saturday morning, the township's forecast shows the most of the storm should have moved through the area.

"We're hoping for a quick-moving storm and have the majority of the mess cleared up before people start rolling out of bed," Kostelich said.

Of course, that will depend on the storm.

The township receives its forecasts from the in Bridgeville.

crews are also preparing for Friday night's snowfall. Trucks are being mounted with plows for what is expected to an accumulating snowstorm.

Adequate salt and material supplies are on hand and equipment has been checked to ensure mechanical readiness. Full crews are out and will remain out treating roadways around-the-clock this weekend.

“With heavy snow followed by a winter mix predicted through tomorrow afternoon, we are preparing for challenging storm,” said Jeff Karr, assistant district executive for maintenance. “We are ready and will be out full force with everything we have as long as necessary.”

Please allow ample space when driving near winter maintenance vehicles. Also, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.

Ski Bus Cancelled

According to the Upper St. Clair District's website, Friday night's ski bus is cancelled due to the possibility of inclement weather 

Upper St. Clair Hoagie Sale

Due to the weather forecast of snow and freezing rain the Upper St Clair Band Hoagie Sale will be on a two-hour delay on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Organizers are asking everyone who will be working the sale to come at 8 a.m. Hoagie pick-up time will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Everyone must pick up their hoagies by noon—no exceptions.

Everyone selling hoagies should notify their customers of the delay in hoagie delivery Saturday in order to lessen confusion.

THON Collections Cancelled

The Post-Gazette reports that Penn State students will not be out collecting money for THON this weekend because of the weather forecast. No student volunteer may travel from Jan. 20-22 to raise money.

This would have been the third weekend for "canning" in which students fan out across the state and collect money to fight childhood cancer.
