Severe Thunderstorm Watch In Effect

The watch issued by the National Weather Service expires at 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Moon Township issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Upper St. Clair and Allegheny County on Thursday.

The watch will expire at 8 p.m.

"There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening. The main threat will be from damaging winds, but large hail is also possible," the weather statement said.

At 2:30 p.m., there was thunder in Upper St. Clair, but no rain or hail.

The high temperature for Thursday is 89 degrees.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services said the high temperature can pose a risk for older adults; infants; children up to the age of four years; people who are overweight; people who exercise or work outdoors; and people with heart or respiratory problems.

The department urges neighbors to check on the elderly during these hot days and reminds residents not to leave a child or a pet in a vehicle alone in this heat.

Taking a cool bath or shower is more effective than using a fan to cool off, if you don't have air conditioning.

Public places that do have air conditioning include the , the South Hills Village Mall, the Community and Recreation Center and the senior centers nearby in Bethel Park and Bridgeville.
