St. Clair Hospital Wins National Award

officials are celebrating an independent study that named it one of the Top-100 hospitals in the country.

The Thomson Reuters study named St. Clair as one of the top Large Community Hospitals after weighing its performance in mortality, patient satisfaction, cost-efficiency and other factors.

The only other hospital in this area to be named to the list was Allegheny General Hospital, which scored high marks as a Major Teaching Institution. The study has been conducted since 1993 and evaluates nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country.

“From a national perspective, it’s nice to be included in the company of such prestigious hospitals,” said Michael Flanagan, who is the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operating officer.

The hospital has won several awards over the past year, . Holly Hampe, who is St. Clair’s chief quality officer, said Reuters tries to measure “the whole package of what a patient would want from a hospital.”

“It’s a nice roll to be on,” she said.

Barry Zaiser, the vice president for Strategic Development and Operations, added the Reuters award is more prestigious than the previous honors. The hospital also received the distinction from Reuters in 2002.

“It’s really one of the most prominent awards nationally,” Zaiser said. “It evaluates the whole hospital. Quality measures across the entire (hospital) and the whole organization.

“It’s very satisfying to receive this award.”
