Shelby's Station: Worth the Stop

A relaxed atmosphere and simple, but delicious, menu makes for a perfect dining experience.

Take one part father's nickname for his daughter, add one part Mustang, sprinkle with some passion and mix with some dedication, and you have the perfect recipe for a restaurant that recently opened in nearby Bridgeville.

"My childhood nickname was Shelbyana, and my favorite car is a Shelby Mustang," said Michele Owens, restaurant owner.

The word, "station," she said, means stopping place. Put them all together, and you get Shelby's Station: A great stopping, eating and drinking place.

Owens, whose 6-week-old restaurant is located at 820 McLaughlin Run Road, is the former owner of Mariani's Restaurant, a well-known dining establishment that used to be located in South Fayette.

The menu begins with popular appetizers, such as zucchini strips for $5.95, and beer battered onion rings and deep friend ravioli, each for $6.95. The menu also features eight different kinds of fresh cut fries, including plain with house spices for $3.45, butter, garlic and parmesan for $3.95, and fries topped with Michele's award winning chili, jalapenos and cheddar for $4.95. We tried the Philly steak and cheese fries, which were served piping hot and covered with mounds of sliced steak, cheese, red and green peppers, and onions, for $5.95.

The soups are homemade and include Michele & Kevin's award-winning chili, which took top prize in the 2009 South Fayette chili cookoff, and wedding soup, which was rated a favorite by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

There are a number of different salads, including the delicious one I chose, which was the honey-basted grilled chicken salad. This salad consisted of chicken, walnuts, cranberries and lettuce covered in a fat free sweet vinegar and olive oil dressing for $9.95. Diners also can choose from the pork tenderloin salad for $11.95, a salmon salad for $12.95, a breaded buffalo chicken salad for $9.95, Shelby's steak salad for $11.95 or Shelby's chicken salad for $9.95.

Also featured on the menu are a variety of hoagies, each stuffed to the brim with various fillings. A half hoagie is $5.95; a whole hoagie is $8.95. Some of the choices include an Italian hoagie, hot stuffed banana pepper hoagie, homemade meatball hoagie and a veggie hoagie.

There also is a wide variety of burgers and chicken sandwiches to choose from. The "Kimba-Mac" is a house favorite and comes with a burger topped with Shelby's special sauce, lettuce, American cheese, pickles and onions for $7.95. For the healthy eaters, there is a carb-free burger that is served over the house garlic salad for $7.95.

Mariani's diners will recognize some of the entree dishes, including the homemade twice baked lasagna for $12.95, the pasta alfredo for $13.95 and the chicken marsala for $13.95.

As most diners would agree, dessert is the favorite part of any meal, and the dessert I ordered did not disappoint. The Sinfully Shelby is a fresh tortilla shell stuffed with cookie dough, then deep fried, drizzled in hot fudge and sprinkled with powdered sugar for $4.95. It was sinfully delicious, although I definitely needed to hit the gym the next day.

Shelby's Station also caters and will make the dishes on their menu or accommodate special requests, with notice of just a few days. In addition, people can text the word "station" to 91944 to receive a coupon for a free drink as well as regular specials and updates.

The restaurant features happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. everyday, with $1 off of drinks and half-priced appetizers. There also are specials during Steelers games as well as regular dinner specials. Amateur singers may want to check out the karaoke night, which begins at 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The hours of operation are 11:30 a.m. to midnight Sunday to Wednesday, and 11:30 to 1:30 a.m. Thursday to Saturday. The kitchen closes at midnight.
