Upper St. Clair Township residents should be on alert for anyone claiming to seek payment on behalf of Duquesne Light.
Company officials said that callers falsely stating that they are Duquesne Light representatives recently have been contacting customers.
The individuals tell the customers that their service will be terminated immediately if payment isn't provided at that time over the phone—either by credit card or prepaid debit card.
Don't believe them.
Jane Cuff, Duquesne Light's director of customer contact, said that the company never demands payment over the phone and does not require customers to purchase prepaid debit cards, including the Green Dot payment cards.
"If a customer receives one of these calls, we are asking that they get as much information from the caller as possible, contact their local police department as well as pass along the information to our customer service representatives by calling 1-888-393-7100," Cuff said.
She also noted that customers should never give any financial information out over the phone to someone whom they do not know.
