Sauce Revisited

A second visit to Sauce and a skillet of warm chocolate chip cookies gets two thumbs up.

As promised, Jeremy and I revisited  in Bridgeville, and we had such a great experience that we wanted to let you know as soon as we could.

We went on a Thursday at about 4:30 p.m.; from 3 p.m. to 5  p.m. every day in March the entire menu — except for drinks and desserts — was half price. Go to their website to join the mailing list; they’ll update you on new offers and specials.

As hoped, we ended up in one of the plush leather booths in the main dining room, and what a difference in atmosphere. The booth was comfortable and roomy and we looked through the large window beside us onto the main street in Bridgeville. Much .

Our waiter was a star. In addition to his great sense of humor, he was knowledgeable about the menu and the preparation of Sauce’s foods; he suggested Jeremy get his hamburger medium rare because anything more would cook away the flavor of the Kobe beef. Jeremy took the suggestion and loved the burger.

Since we were eating so early, we weren’t overly hungry, but we couldn’t pass up the skillet of Idaho and sweet potato fries served with onions, cheese and sour cream.

Jeremy had the Rambo Burger (Virginia baked ham and aged Swiss cheese) this time around and loved both the combination of toppings and the preparation of the burger itself.

I tried the Wedgey Salad ($8, and “unlike any wedgy you received in high school,” the menu promised) and was pleased with the simplicity and quality of ingredients: crispy lettuce, fresh tomato, red peppers and hard-boiled egg.

I couldn’t leave without another round of Sauce mac and cheese, though I ended up taking most of it home. It reheats just lovely, and it was lunch the next day.

A few of my students were livid that we didn’t get the “To Be A Kid” dessert on our last visit, so despite our doggy-bags of dinner sitting on the table, we ordered the skillet of four fresh chocolate chip cookies topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.  The photo should speak for the dish:  please note the half-eaten cookie in the skillet; we were so caught up with devouring it that we almost forgot to take a picture!

So our final thoughts on Sauce: Go. Wait for the front room, try the mac and cheese and “Get ‘em Loaded fries,” and please, please, please… save room for dessert.
