New Site Transports TV Wardrobe to Your Closet

Curvio's co-founder hails from Pittsburgh.

See it. Love it. Buy it. That’s the tagline of a new website that has made quite a splash in recent weeks.

Curvio.com launched on Feb. 1 with the goal of organizing entertainment fashion in all forms of media—i.e. a searchable online database of the clothing used in TV shows (and eventually movies).

Garnering international media attention and a spot on global style hub Refinery29, Curvio's co-founder hails from Pittsburgh.

President Wesley Tansey and lead developer Scott Werner—both Virginia Tech alumni—toyed with the concept for some time. Tansey is from Washington D.C., and currently lives in Austin, TX.

Werner resides in Sewickley. His sister, Stephanie, serves as chief marketing officer and also lives in Pittsburgh.

So how does it work?

"You’re watching a show and you see a fabulous necklace," she said. "You think I’d love to have that—where can I get it?

"If you searched the Internet, it would take hours. We’re a one-stop site where you can find anything you saw on that (specific) show."

At the moment, Curvio pulls from four top-watched TV shows: Gossip Girl, Criminal Minds, Pretty Little Liars and Glee.

Curvio sends out the request and a photo to a group of hired, professional shoppers. They then seek out the sequined mini, and voilà! Options are posted on the site. 

If the original $6,000 piece isn’t in your budget, not to worry. A variety of choices are posted.

"Sometimes the exact item is not offered anymore or it is an item that is not for sale,” Stephanie said. "In the case that we do not have the exact item, we will always have similar options. The three or more similar items are always going to be shown as options of what is out there or "dress for less" options."

Viewers can make requests via Twitter (@Curvio) and Facebook. Stephanie told us the company has been polling followers.

"The main feedback we’re getting is that we need to add more shows," she said. "We chose Gossip Girl because it’s most watched for its fashion."

Along with feedback, the new site is making its media rounds in China, Canada, Brazil and the U.S., and had 30,000 clicks in one week.

"This is just the beginning," she said. "We are growing, adding more shows and eventually plan to add movies.

"There's nothing like this on the web right now and we're super excited about it." 

Curvio held the top position on reddit.com the day it launched. Gabriel Bell, for Refinery29, referred to it as a "mythical website you've always wanted."

The fashion-focused hub said Curvio has "a ways to go," but is totally rooting for it—as are we.
