Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh Workers Laid Off

The diocese is funded by a share of collections from its parishes, including St. John Capistran and St. Louise de Marillac in Upper St. Clair.

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is laying off workers to avoid a $2.3 million deficit for the 2012-13 fiscal year, according to WTAE

Twenty-five full-time positions and eight part-time jobs were eliminated, Bishop David Zubik announced Thursday.

A diocesan spokesman said $1 million had been saved by 15 employees who retired, resigned or were reassigned, WTAE reports.

Zubik said the decisions weren't easy, but were done with "professionalism, precision and care."

"And with the clear understanding that we are first and foremost a church, not a corporation trying to build an attractive bottom line," he said.

Income is projected to be $21 million this year—the diocesan budget for 2011-2012 was $23.2 million.

The diocese is funded by a share of collections from its parishes, including St. John Capistran and St. Louise de Marillac in Upper St. Clair. The diocesan budget doesn't include its social service agencies or parishes, which have their own budgets, however it covers administrative staff, including central church offices and some administration for its Catholic schools.

Isn't the real number of persons actually unemployed, something like 2 full time and 1 part time.

The Bible makes it very clear what Christ's expectations are for Christians surrounding gambling andRead More games of chance. Bingo and a Raffle should strike many as surprising events/activities for a church sponsored event. The 'MoreFest' is a wonderful event to provide a family friendly Christian atmosphere for the community. Sadly, the activities themselves send a mixed message, further confusing non-believers who prefer to frame Christians as hypocrites rather than fallible humans who are saved because the choose to believe.

Field hockey is one of the oldest spors onRead More the planet dating back 5000 years but wasn't played by women until about two hundred years ago. gender bias in field hockey in the USA is killing our women's team. They finish dead last in the 2012 Olympics and came from the only country in the competition with less men playing in your country than any of the other team
