Flag Retirement, Free Concert and More Planned at Nearby Park

Summer happenings are heating up at nearby South Park. Here are some fun activities coming in up the next week:

Tuesday, June 11

What: Yoga in the Park
Where: South Park Maple Springs Pond Gazebo
When: 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.
Cost: Free
Why: Power Flow Yoga is accessible to all levels & ages (under 18 must have parental consent). Power Flow is designed to strengthen muscles, increase balance, flexibility and endurance, in turn, linking the body and mind.

What: South Park Table Tennis – Competitive Play
Where: South Park Home Economics Building
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: Free for first several sessions
Why: Everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level.

Wednesday, June 12

What: BMX Race
Where: South Park BMX Track
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $9 for first bike, $4 for same rider’s second bike.

Thursday, June 13

What: South Park Table Tennis – Informal Practice
Where: South Park Home Economics Building
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: Free for first several sessions
Why: Everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level.

What: 7th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony
Where: South Park Flag Retirement Plaza
When: 6:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Why: Flags that have become worn and unusable while flying in service to our nation will be properly retired by being disposed of in the plaza's burn pit. Allegheny County Council, in conjunction with Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, will host the event and encourage the public to attend.

What: Tommy Castro & The Painkillers in Concert
Where: South Park Amphitheater
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Why: Tommy Castro has been compared to Otis Redding and was named 2008’s Entertainer of the Year at the Blues Music Awards. He was also the big winner at the 2010 Blues Music Awards, including B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Band of the Year, Contemporary Blues Album of the Year and Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year. Since then he and his band have continued to make music and entertain their fans with their blend of blues and southern rock.

What: Miles Against Melanoma 5K Run/Walk
Where: South Park Edgebrook Field
When: 9:15 a.m.
Cost: $25 for advanced registration, $30 for day-of registration
Why: Miles Against Melanoma is a nationwide non-profit organization whose mission is to fight melanoma by increasing awareness, supporting patients, survivors and families and fundraising for research. Pre-register online.

What: Venture Outdoors – Intro to Summer Backpacking
Where: Meet at South Park Ice Rink Parking Lot
When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost: $15 for Venture Outdoors members, $20 for non-members.
Why: Join for a short hike and a discussion of summer backpacking essentials. This trip is designed to introduce the beginner to the basics of backpacking. Topics will include essential gear, packing your pack, water filtration and purification, cooking and safety.

Where: South Park Oliver Miller Homestead
When: 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Cost: $1
Why: Tours are self-guided, but the Miller Homestead Associates dress in period attire, give information about the family and the area history, demonstrate crafts and answer questions.

Also, at nearby Settlers Cabin Park

What: Great Amazing Race
Where: Settlers Cabin Park Moccasin Shelter
Cost: $40 per team (2 people), $50 late registration.
Why: Modeled after the popular television show “The Amazing Race,” two-person teams race against other teams in a string of up to eight fun-filled challenges spread across a one-mile cross-country course. Each station will contain a Secret Clue Card that instructs each team to complete a task (game, relay, obstacle course, etc.) before proceeding to the next challenge station. The team that reaches the finish line with the fastest overall time wins. How well you work as a team is the most essential ingredient to winning the race. Register online.
