'Snowmageddon' Returns? Farmers' Almanac Predicts Cold/Snowy Winter in Western PA

If the Farmers' Almanac is to be believed, the Pittsburgh area is in for a cold, wet and white winter.

"We don't use four-letter words, but when it comes to this winter's weather the word is c-o-l-d," the Almanac's Managing Editor Sandi Duncan told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "We're predicting two-thirds of the country will have below-average temperatures for the winter season, and in some areas, the temperatures will be biting and piercing."

According to the Almanac, Pittsburgh is right on the dividing line between an area of "bitterly cold and snow-filled" and "cold, wet and white."

"You guys are right on the borderline," Duncan told the P-G. "It looks like it's going to be a wet winter, and more white than wet in Pittsburgh."

Duncan said that the Almanac's confidence level for accuracy with its winter predictions is 80 to 85 percent.

If the forecast is worrisome to the average Pittsburgh-area resident, imagine what NFL officials are thinking. The Almanac is predicting a major winter storm to hit the East Coast in early February, which could affect the Super Bowl—to be played Feb. 2, outdoors, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey's Meadowlands.
