Region's Only Watershed Festival Promises Fun for All

Allegheny County Sanitary Authority will hold an open house on Saturday.

The region’s only watershed festival will take place as the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) holds and open house on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be held rain or shine at ALCOSAN, 3300 Preble Ave. in Pittsburgh.

Free and open to the public, the event highlights include hands-on environmental activities and exhibits such as, examining the plant and reptiles that depend on a clean watershed, Environmental Jeopardy, bike bowling, pollution prevention and microbiology booths, touring a virtual sewer line, information about sewer overflows and related water quality issues, and more.

In addition, bus tours of the 56-acre wastewater treatment plant and tours of the environmental laboratory will be offered. A special hands-on children’s tour is available for younger visitors.

As the festival is an environmental event, waste generated at the event will be recycled and also composted.

There will be giveaways, food, special appearances by Radio Disney and Froggy radio. There is plenty of free parking. The event is handicapped accessible. For more information about activities and directions, visit www.alcosan.org.

A joint city-county authority, ALCOSAN treats an average of 200 million gallons of wastewater daily representing treatment service from 320,000 customers in 83 communities, including the city of Pittsburgh.
