Post-Sept. 11 Military Authors Answer Leadership Questions for Pittsburgh Veterans

A group of post-Sept. 11 military authors will address the gap in leadership opportunities for returning military veterans by sharing their leadership experiences from the past 10 years of war.

A leadership talk hosted from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Barnes & Noble at South Hills Village is the headline event in Pittsburgh for the In the Shadow of Greatness national book tour. The veteran authors hope to inspire future leaders in the Pittsburgh area and national leaders for service in government, politics and business.

“By sharing the stories of veteran service, we honor all Americans who have given back to their country, those who have served before us and those who have stepped up in this post-9/11 generation,” said Brad Harrison, e-book contributor and editor, and Upper St. Clair resident. “Our book offers a rare look into the lives of this new generation of veterans, who are poised to lead the nation in the years ahead.”

This event is designed to help both veterans and their civilian families and co-workers better understand the needs, goals and opportunities for post-Sept. 11 veterans.

The In the Shadow of Greatness authors—the first Naval Academy officers to graduate after Sept. 11—share their unique perspective of young veterans and highlight the service and sacrifice of military members during the last 10 years of war, and how these young veterans hope to give back to their country in the next 10 years.

Featured stories include the last female to fly the F-14 Tomcat, counter-insurgency missions in Fallujah, a Navy-grad turned Army officer charged with casualty notifications, and the first gay Naval Officer to marry after the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal.
