Local Dad Starts Social Group, No Moms Allowed

A stay-at-home dad in Upper St. Clair starts a social group for other men in his position.

Playdates are a common practice among stay-at-home moms. The mothers get together to keep their children entertained and support each other. Well now Jason Stafford, a stay-at-home father of two in Upper St. Clair, has started the same thing -- for men.

"It hasn't been easy coming across dads in my position." Stafford said. "I've belonged to other groups, but they were basically moms. I used them as a model to get something to grow."

Stafford has created a new group called Pittsburgh Dads. Already the group has 15 members, who meet up at least once a week, to provide a social outlet for the little ones and for the dads.

"We're all guys and can relate to each other's situations more so than anyone else," Stafford said.

Stafford thinks the children of the stay-at-home dads should be provided the same opportunities as the kids of the stay-at-home moms.

"They're not getting to socialize with other kids and learn those (social) skills," Stafford said.

So what do you have to do to join? It's pretty easy, all you have to do is be a dad. Plus, it's free. The only money spent is on the activities. The group will visit the Children's Museum of PittsburghGiggles and Smiles and the National Aviary.

The group also organizes dad-only activities. Friday night was the first "Dad Night" out. The men took a break from the kids, and spent a few hours at Bar Louie in Station Square.
