Flag Day: 'Retire Old Glory' Bin Available at Upper St. Clair Community & Recreation Center

'The flags are old and need to be retired with the proper respect given.' - Boy Scout Nathan Pica

Flag Day, a time to celebrate the Stars and Stripes of the United States, is this Friday, making this a good time to use the "Retire Old Glory" flag collection bin at the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair.

Ron Sarrick, Upper St. Clair Public Works' buildings/grounds and sustainability administrator, regularly collects damaged and worn U.S. flags left at the bin and puts them in storage until they are taken by a local Boy Scouts troop to be burned in a proper retirement ceremony.

Troop No. 366 of Upper St. Clair has conducted such ceremonies in the past, like this one in October.

"The flags are old and need to be retired with the proper respect given," said sixth-grade Scout Nathan Pica in October.
