Columbia Gas Project to Close Upper St. Clair Roadway This Summer

The project is part of a $16 million upgrade to area pipes.

Columbia Gas plans on upgrading 5,000 feet of pipe under Country Club Drive in Upper St. Clair this summer.

Details are still being determined, however, the project is expected to begin in July.

"There will be detours and single lane closures during working hours only. Signs will clearly mark the detour and we will have flaggers to control traffic flow," said Brynnly Mazzie, communications and community relations specialist.

The Upper St. Clair project is part of 13 significant pipeline improvement projects across the greater Pittsburgh area for the second quarter of 2013.

Many of the projects upgrade aging bare steel and cast iron pipe with a state-of-the-art plastic natural gas delivery system.

As an added safety measure, most residential and commercial service line upgrades will feature an excess flow valve, which automatically shuts off the natural gas service in the event of a large pressure differential, indicative of a leak or damage.

"Investing and modernizing our infrastructure reflects our ongoing commitment to ensure that we continue to deliver safe, reliable and efficient natural gas service to our customers," said Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania President Mark Kempic. "We plan to invest more than $140 million in 2013 in replacing and upgrading infrastructure across our Pennsylvania service territory."
