Upper St. Clair High School Alumni Awarded Cadet of the Year

Dec. 17, 2013 — Cadet First Lieutenant Anthony DeRubeis, a 2013 graduate of Upper St. Clair High Schoo1, was awarded Cadet of the Year by Civil Air Patrol’s Allegheny Composite Squadron 602 at the unit’s annual banquet at the Skyvue Firehall in West Mifflin, PA on December 7th.  The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is an official auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF) that performs search and rescue and emergency services, as well as teaches aerospace and leadership through their cadet program in communities nationwide.

Cadet 1Lt. DeRubeis has served in the cadet program of the Allegheny Squadron of Civil Air Patrol for almost four years. Since joining, he has been extremely active and has worked his way to Cadet First Lieutenant, one of the highest ranks a student can achieve. He has also held all flight level positions, the position of Squadron First Sergeant, and is currently the Cadet Recruiter and Deputy Cadet Commander for his unit.  He is honored that he received 2012 Cadet of the Year from his squadron.

"I am not about chasing awards but it is nice to be recognized after so many years of hard work,” said Cadet 1 Lt. DeRubeis.  “I am here for my cadets at this point in my career."

Cadet 1Lt. DeRubeis has been active in his leadership training by attending Basic Encampment in 2010, Leadership Development Course in 2011, and staffing Encampment as a public affairs officer in 2012. While striving to become a better leader, Cadet DeRubeis pushes his cadets to do the same through hard work, discipline, establishing pride in their work, as well as giving the attitude to never settle for less.  He is active on the squadron’s ground team and is currently a ground team member rating 1, training for ground team leader, and a Ranger 2nd class with a host of support qualifications. He has gone on six ground team missions and was the cadet in charge of all communications at Wings Over Pittsburgh as a Cadet Technical Sergeant in 2011.  Cadet First Lieutenant DeRubeis’ other accomplishments include CAP’s rigourous summer training program,  Hawk Mountain Ranger School, in Kempton, PA where he was upgraded to Romeo Squadron, staff training, upon arrival and received honor cadet for his performance that week.

Currently Cadet 1Lt. DeRubeis attends Point Park University for Intelligence and National Security, and Army ROTC at University of Pittsburgh.  He works at Shadyside Market and Deli, as well as cuts lawns throughout the spring, fall, and summer. Cadet DeRubeis hopes to join the US Army and move onto covert operations with the CIA. When Cadet DeRubeis is not at Civil Air Patrol or working he enjoys running, biking, hiking, filming, airsoft, snowboarding, visiting friends, and traveling. His favorite color is pink, and his most satisfying feeling in life is when he sees his cadets succeed.
