USCHS Crew Team Recruiting for 2012-13 Season

Hey 8th, 9th,10th,and 11th graders: What will you be doing next year in high school?

The Upper St. Clair High School crew team is looking for new athletes for its 2012-13 season.

If you are an incoming freshman or a returning sophomore, junior, or senior, there are several opportunities to check out the crew team.

Even if you have never heard of rowing or never even participated in a sport before, the crew team wants to hear from you. There are fall, winter and spring seasons and everyone—even beginning (novice) rowers—competes on the water against similarly skilled rowers from high schools in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.

Why row? Rowing is a full-body fitness sport that only requires a minimum of skills to begin and can be mastered by anyone regardless of age, gender or size. It is the ultimate team sport because success depends on all rowers showing up on time and giving their greatest possible effort. Rowing teaches the value of deferred gratification, and mental toughness. It teaches young people to go beyond self-imposed limits. It can make high school a little bit easier by having somewhere to belong and most importantly, rowing is fun!

USC crew alumni have rowed at Georgetown, Columbia University, University of Dayton, Ohio State University and George Washington University. There are many opportunities for good rowers to obtain scholarship money, especially for girls, because of Title IX. While crew doesn't guarantee college money, it can be a key component in getting into a school that would otherwise be out of reach.
