Yes, You Can Dance! Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

Yes, You Can Dance! is celebrating its first anniversary next month.

In its first year, the local, non-profit organization has focused on programming for senior citizens and individuals with special needs at little or no cost to the
participants.

“Our focus is on sharing the joys and benefits of dance”, said Becky Stern, founder and president and Upper St. Clair resident. “The research is very clear about the benefits of dance on our physical and emotional well being. Through a mix of original programming and partnerships with other community organizations, we can increase access to dance. The name of our organization says it all. Yes, you can dance, regardless of your age, your physical or intellectual capabilities. You can experience all the joy and benefits of dancing.”

On Saturday, Nov. 3, seniors are invited to attend the 2nd Annual Saturday Social at the Community and Recreation Center in Upper St. Clair. One unique aspect of the event is the dance host. Dance hosts are volunteer dancers, who ensure that every guest who wants to dance gets to dance. So, no dance partners are needed to attend.

The celebration continues on Sunday, Nov. 4 with a dance party for special needs ballroom students, their families and dance mentors. Christopher Roth, owner of Steel City Ballroom, serves as the special needs program director. Under his leadership, the students and dance mentors enjoy Sunday afternoon classes filled with enthusiasm and camaraderie. Dance mentors attend free training sessions so they can provide instructional support during the group lessons. Recently, Yes, You Can Dance! launched an exhibition team made up of students and mentors.

Year two plans will focus on the expansion of the special needs and senior
programs.
