USC School District Warns of Confirmed Whooping Cough Case

Make sure your child has been immunized against pertussis.

A child in the Upper St. Clair School District has a confirmed case of pertussis—better known as whooping cough.

Superintendent Patrick O'Toole sent a letter to parents last week after receiving information about the confirmed case from the Allegheny County Health Department.

There has been a rising number of pertussis cases throughout Allegheny County recent months.

Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes severe episodes of coughing which may make breathing difficult, result in vomiting and produce a high-pitched “whooping” sound when a person takes a breath. The disease is spread from person to person by tiny droplets from an infected person’s nose or mouth which become airborne when the person sneezes or coughs. Initial symptoms may appear similar to the common cold. Severe episodes of coughing start about 10 to 12 days later.

If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms, if your child has not been immunized against pertussis, or if your child’s immune system is suppressed, you may wish to consult with your family health care provider.

If you have any questions regarding these matters, O'Toole asks you contact your school nurse.

This is the second case of pertussis in the school district this year. Another child contracted the infection in May.

Truly sad. Why isnt the whopping cough vaccine mandated every year? Is this a 1 time shot or do they need it every year?

The vaccine wears off in 3-5 years.

Thanks to Andrew Wakefield, Jennie McCarthy and the tinfoil hat wearing parents who don't vaccinate their children because their armchair studies told them that vaccines cause autism.

Parents. Take a hint. Vaccinate your child!

@ Bryan. We can get a point without the serious sarcasm or infringing upon someone's rights on what they will or will not do. I do not believe in these studies either especially after the doctor who wrote them has been accused of fraud. And with regards to tinfoil wearing hats I am sure there are things that you do that people could say the same. So please be civil.

So if it wears off every 3 to 5 years shouldn't the dept of health mandate that kids get the shot?

Booster shots are recommended, but those who object for religious or other reasons are able to decline. Kudos to a parent who actually takes the time to research the ingredients of the drugs and vaccines that their children get and food they consume and decide whether or not they are safe and ethical. I am increasingly leery of pharmaceutical and agribusiness products with the vast number of new, strange and frightening chemicals used in our food and drugs that the FDA deems ‘safe’ at first and then after years of use, they are taken off the market for safety reasons. I’m not interested in being a Guinea pig, thanks.

Well I was first in line few years ago for the H1N1 vac due to my job. And some of the shots have been given for years. So I question these studies. Just like parents who use alcohol gel to santaize everything. Once we do that we do not allow our bodies to build up a effective immune system. Take for example growing up into my late 20's I never had sea food (lobster, clams, oysters, sea scallops) my wife took me to a nice sea food resteraunt I love the taste but it causes me GI issues per my doctor because I did not eat this stuff before I have sensitive to them so I can not eat. Not allergic just dont agree with me. This is one reason I still use hillfolks medicine for a lot of things.

But the question arises is the choice based on actual facts or junk science? For example the English doctor who linked autism to the immunization? And his study turned out to be fraud

Ok, sarcasm aside. The anti-vaccination movement and those parents who refuse to vaccinate their children but put them in our public schooling and daycare facilities are a danger and a threat to our health as a society.

There is no such thing as an 'educated parent' when it comes to vaccinations unless you are a medical doctor. Many Doctors will refuse to even treat a patient who refuses vaccination because they are a danger to the practice.

The AAP exists for a reason, they have done A LOT of research on this, this research has been done by educated medical doctors. Yes, there is a small risk when vaccinating a child, that risk is highly outweighed by the benefit of the vaccination. Our herd immunity is being seriously compromised by the anti-vax movement.

My reference to tinfoil hat wearing parents would be in reference to those who still believe the Wakefield study or who believe Jennie McCarthy.

What bothers me as a healthcare provider is before I was allowed to start I had to prove I had all my shots and If I didn't I had to get them with out exception

Darn iPhone. But parents are allowed to send kids to school with out there shots. This isn't about individual rights this is a serious health issue that needs to be addressed. It saddens me when I hear residents tout expert opinions and you want to laugh and Gibb slap them and ask what are you thinking. Because this garbage science is going to kill
