USC Native Spreading Her Love of Music
Daisy Klaber, of Household Harmony, is sharing her passion for music with people of all ages in the South Hills.
Music was a central part of Daisy Klaber's life as she grew up in Upper St. Clair. Today, she is making it her mission to spread the joy of music with other families in the South Hills.
"It's easy to pop in a CD or turn on your iPod," Klaber said. "What I'm trying to do, is teach families the joys of making music instead of just consuming it."
Klaber is the director of Household Harmony, a Music Together organization, which provides music classes for young children and their caregivers. One of the most popular classes is the intergenerational Music Together class that is taking place at the Asbury Heights assisted living facility in Mount Lebanon. Parents bring their children to sing, clap and dance with the senior citizen residents. The class is energizing for everyone who attends.
"Oh I just love it," Ruth Ann Kramer, 92, said. "It's so good seeing these baby faces after seeing all the old faces around here."
"It's really good to see the kids interact with all the other age levels," Michael Bosh, a participating father, said.
The class benefits all generations in attendance. The musical activities help children develop and achieve basic music competence. For the senior citizens, the social interaction helps keep them motivated and functioning.
"Everybody leaves here with a smile," Laura Mercolini, a participating mother said.
"Music is a natural bonding experience," Klaber said. "It's for all ages and all abilities. Our goal is to create lasting and meaningful memories."

It was amazing to see how music and movement truly brought joy to everyone in the room. Many of the Asbury Heights residents told me the class was the highlight of their week.
