A Washington County man charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and careless driving in Upper St. Clair waived his preliminary hearing to court on Monday.

Michael S. Taylor, 39, of 963 Sugar Run Rd., Eighty Four, was pulled over on Washington Road by an Upper St. Clair police officer at 12:45 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2011.

The officer stated in a criminal complaint that he saw the driver speeding down Washington Road near the Wagner's St. Clair Mini Mart. The officer started to follow the car, and stated the car was pulling ahead of him as he was driving 80 mph.

Soon after, the officer stated he pulled over the car near Rex Glass & Mirror Company in Peters Township.

Taylor told the officer he was on his way home and had no alcohol, according to the criminal complaint. However, the officer stated he smelled alcohol and conducted a field sobriety test, in which Taylor failed.

Taylor's blood alcohol content level was measured at .131 percent. The legal level of alcohol in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

The case against Kathryn L. Smith, 23, of 210 10th St., Sharpsburg, in district Judge Wyda's court was continued for 30 days on Monday.

Smith is charged with one count of having drug paraphernalia and one count of summary disorderly conduct, after she overdosed at a home located at 361 Ramada Dr., Upper St. Clair.

Two used syringes and four empty stamp bags with blue-and-red stars were brought to the Upper St. Clair Police Department from the home.
