Township Plans to Resurface 16 Roads in 2013
Commissioners awarded a bid of $1.022 million to El Grande Industries on Monday night.
The Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners awarded a bid for $1.022 million to El Grande Industries Monday night for the 2013 resurfacing program.
The bid came under the $1.2 million the commissioners budgeted for the project this year.
The list of roads to be resurfaced was developed based on a rating system that looks at road usage, the last year it was paved, the condition, the public input and other similar factors. This list could be changed, especially after the freeze-thaw cycle in the spring.
- Bartley Road
- Clairmont Drive
- Country Club Drive
- Fox Run Circle
- High Knolls Drive
- Hollow Tree Drive
- Huntington Drive
- Keifer Drive
- Pheasant Circle
- Phillips Drive
- Sherbrooke Drive
- Southern Hilands Drive
- Southwood Drive
- Timberwood Drive
- Weston Drive
- Woodlands Circle
There are also tentative plans to resurface the municipal basketball courts and the Baker Park tennis courts—with pickleball lines.

The Cook School Field parking lot is in desperate need of repair. It has huge potholes and is just nasty. I think that the money intended for the resurfacing of the Baker Park tennis courts should be diverted for the Cook School Field lot to fill in some of the holes. Can’t pickleball be played elsewhere, like in one of those huge tennis domes on McLaughlin Run Road or at the Upper St. Clair Community and Recreation Center?

Very valid point about the Cook School Field Lot. The photography club I am in frequent that parking lot (that vantage point makes for a magnificent photo of the sunrise).
From my perspective, our township does not need pickleballers- I have a friend that resides in Fox Chapel and their tennis courts are being infiltrated with pickleballers....and its not looking good. They bring their skateboards and spray paint with them.I just hope the township officials know what they are getting into harboring the pickleballers. Lock your doors folks.

The Cook School Field parking lot and Cook School Field are owned by the Upper St. Clair School District, therefore we the township can not pave it.

Why is it categorized as a "park" under the Township Code?

Just amazing! If it doesn't benefit me it must not benefit anyone. Obviously pickle ball is an up and coming sport. Kids tried using the unused paddle ball courts but were kicked off of there. This resulted in no spray painting and no skateboarding incidents. Get with it people! Atleast know what you are talking about before you mouth off.

@Maria Miller. So you’re saying that if Cricket becomes the “up and coming sport” then the township should spend money on building a Cricket Pitch???? Come on Maria, GET WITH IT! Where would it stop? Just because some whiny kids didn’t get their way, we as a township should bend over backwards for them and spend money on a pickleball court. Maybe they should get a job. Did you ever think of that? USC has numerous facilities to support a myriad of different activities…basketball, tennis, golf, swimming, hiking, running/jogging, baseball, playgrounds for children, and the list goes on and on. We even have a The Miracle Field for handicapped children. So maybe some commenters should do some research or just drive around USC before they mouth off.

I don't want any pickleballers in my neighborhood! I wonder what Oren thinks of this?

@Becky Brindle. As a homeowner I am responsible for the sidewalk in front of my home even though it is in the township’s right-of-way. If my sidewalk is in disrepair, the township can force me to fix it for safety reason. Why doesn’t the township force the school district to fix this lot? It is surely a safety hazard. We all know that school district has the money to do so…just look at the Boyce School football field. The township can take the initiative and complete the work or force them to do so.

First off why does the School District own the Cook School Property? I can't say for sure but I was told because they bought it to build a new school and then found out it was a Hazardous Waste Dump in a prior life! Nothing can be built on it because the vapors can get trapped in a confined space. Nice move USC School Board! Therefore they will not pave the lot so as not to trap those VAPORS!
The Miracle League Field was built with private funds. The township helped by donating the land and a few minor things. In fact the paving of the additional parking spaces was paid for with Miracle League Funds. I know because I contributed close to $100,000. How much did you give Mr. Amaze ME?
There is a group of parents that have formed a "Roller Blade Club" for kids to compete on teams in USC. They use the rink by the old rec center as their home base but are in desperate need of a new facility. That rink is in bad shape and could cause injury if not fixed soon; priority build a new rink! They are in the process of requesting a new facility to the USC council.
As for "Pickleballers"; unite! Parents if there is a real need and desire for this "sport" get off the couch, organize, get petitions and present your proposal to the township board. They do listen and try to work with everyone if it is found feasible. GOOD LUCK!

@Ted... First off let me say welcome to the patch. I notice that this is your first post. So hopefully you are a legitimate contributor, but I highly doubt it (a person that donates "close to $100,000" for a charity usually doesn't brag about it on an internet news website).
Secondly, I've been a resident of this wonderful Township my entire life and have never once saw a youngster rollerblading. And this "rink" you speak of, I'm not sure where that is exactly....could you enlighten us and tell us where the rink is located.
Lastly, I will reiterate my concern for that hellish sport of pickleball....I am not some cranky old geezer who hates all juveniles. My friend from Fox Chapel has seen the type of people that game attracts....BEWARE OF THE PICKLEBALLERS!!!!!

Welcome Ted-be warned! There are several angry people here on the site. I believe that the school district has owned CS for a very long time and there used to be a little school nearby (vaguely remember USC history when we moved here). I do fail to see how filling the CRATERS and paving will trap vapors-it is an open space. If is really is a waste dump, why are they building those whoppers right next to the field?

I guess I am revealing my age by admitting I have never heard of pickleball until this post. What is it?

In defense of Wake Up.... I also don't know of any rink as described. "They use the rink by the old rec center as their home base but are in desperate need of a new facility."

For all those who DO NOT know scroll to the bottom of this web page, (Inline Skate). http://www.uscsd.k12.pa.us/Page/1339 I don't see kids rowing boats in Chartiers Creek but we do have a "Crew Team"!

I have to agree with some of the posters about this "pickleball epidemic". The crowd that this sports attracts is not good. My nephew used to play tennis and then got hooked on this "pickleball" phenomenon. His mother and father had to recently have him counseled at Gateway rehab for marijuana use. These kids are using "pickleball" as a cover up for using drugs. I think the township needs to pass an ordinance banning the game on township properties.

These pickleballers are no good! We as parents need to get on top of this!
