A beautiful evening of weather greeted the vendors and residents who attended the kickoff to the second annual Upper St. Clair Lions Club Farmers Market on Thursday.

"It never rains on Thursday in Upper St. Clair," said Arlene Weintraub, the wife of a USC Lions Club member. "Last year every Thursday was bright and sunny."

Quite the contrast to the weather the area has experienced this spring.

According to the head organizer of the Farmers Market, Burt Bowman, one of the vendors couldn't make it to the first night. The continual rain this spring caused the crop at Cristoff's Farm to rot.

"As the weather is getting better and the market progresses I think the customers are going to see more and more variety," Bowman said.

"We've gotten a lot of rain. The creek by our fields flooded," said Jessica Luber of Bluebird Farm. "We only have half of our potatoes planted."

The flowers were also tough to grow during spring's extreme weather.

"We had people planting in the rain and mud last week. They had to hose off the bottom six inches of their pants before they came in for lunch," said Bob Ambrose, of Ridgeview Acres. "We don't know how the spring will affect us for the year yet."

There are 18 returning vendors this year and eight new ones, selling the vegetables and organic products one would expect to see, along with greek food, shaved ice, beef, cheese and much more.

"It's a good market," said Liz Franbes, of Simmons Farm. "For the first week the turnout is really good."

"This is our second year. There are a lot of vendors and a lot of good people here too," Luber said.

"We're maxed out in capacity," Bowman said. "I'm very pleased."

The Farmers Market will take place every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Westminster Presbyterian Church's parking lot until Sept. 29.

Justin has the best shaved ice around...so many flavors to choose from. I favor the coconut.
I'm proud to be his mom! :D
