The Upper St. Clair School Board and district administrators honored the high school's boys' soccer team on Monday night.

The team won the PIAA championship in November.

"We couldn't win the section, couldn't win WPIALs, so we thought we might as well win the state championship," joked head coach Uwe Schneider, a German teacher at Boyce Middle School.

The Panthers beat Wilson High School 1-0, after losing in the state championship game last year.

"They played the best game of the season and these guys really deserved to be state champs," said Schneider, who is now the coach of three state championship team.

Superintendent Patrick O'Toole and school board President Barbara Bolas presented each player with a certificate and cafeteria gift card. O'Toole praised the boys for their hard work and dedication.

"It's (the state championship) something you will never forget. You'll carry this for the rest of your lives," O'Toole said.
