Speeding on McLaughlin Run Road Becoming a Big Problem

Police wrote 32 speeding tickets and seven other traffic citations on the road in October.

Speeding is becoming a major issue on McLaughlin Run Road.

Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said his department wrote 32 speeding tickets and seven other traffic citations along the road in October.

King said residents near Coolidge Street started complaining about speeders in early October, prompting officers to increase patrols in the area. The results surprised King when the roadway overtook Bower Hill Road as the town’s new speedzone.

“We received some complaints on McLaughlin and we’ve been hitting it hard. It’s unbelievable,” King said. “If we’re writing this many tickets then there’s an obvious problem there.”

And the problem is continuing in November. King said they’re on pace to match the October ticket results this month.

“I don’t ever remember it being like this,” King said. “It’s certain roads at certain times.”

The speed limit is 25 miles per hour in the area, and King said they’ve clocked most people driving faster than 40 and, in some cases, 50 mph.

However, the recent installation of three “speed humps” along Ridge Road apparently is helping to slow motorists down, King said. He said officers monitored that area last week and didn’t ticket any motorists for speeding.

I live on Mclaughlin and let me tell you there isa stop sign that nobody stops at not even the police! Its always a close call when I try and back out of my drive way! I worry for my kids when we leave the driveway because the speeds people go if they were to hit us while backing up god only knows what would happen! Slow down no where is worth risking yours or others lives

Kimberly, do you mean the ridge road stop sign where you aren't required to stop?

Regarding the speeding. I see 2 major factors in place here.

1. McLaughlin is 40mph until you hit Bridgeville then it drops to 25 mph. This will inevitably cause people to speed.

2. The bridge widening, the bridge used to be a natural speed deterrent. Now that it is wider, there is no need to slow down when approaching.

Regardless. People speed everywhere.

I live on Clairmont Dr. where there are 3 speed humps and they aren't effective in slowing people down. Wish police would patrol the street more often.

I live off of Phillips Drive and the portion of that street from after the stop sign at Adams is like a racetrack...most blow through that stop sign as well.
