No Rate Increase for Community and Recreation Center Members

There will be no rate increase this year for Upper St. Clair Community and Recreation Center members.
"Our feeling is to reward the residents and members for the success we have had," said Paul Besterman, director of recreation and leisure services.
The center's capital fund, which is used for ongoing repairs and maintenance, currently has $750,000 in it.
The recreation department shared a "wish list" of items with the Upper St. Clair commissioners that it may want to improve at the recreation center in the future. Major changes would be an expanded fitness center area and locker rooms, a new auxiliary gym space and expanded outdoor and indoor pool facility—including a warm water instructional pool.
"We're entering year four and want to make sure the demand is there (before making the improvements listed above)," Besterman said.
On the other hand, Besterman said the center wants to be sure it continues to be able to provide the service necessary for its growing membership.
The outdoor pool will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 26.

An indoor playground of some sort - there's nothing for the toddler set and younger kids to do there in the winter to burn energy except swim, which in the winter requires a change of clothes (and just more laundry and hassle for the parents). And sometimes it's just too cold outside to swim, even when it's warm inside. Toddlers need to stay active too.

Agree, a playground, even if outdoors, would be great. Also would be nice to have more lanes in lap pool.

Additonal outdoor pool that is larger for teens and adults. I feel the outdoor pool is mainly for younger children. Teens do not want to go because there is no area for them to swim laps or hang out in deeper water without toddlers everwhere.

I love how he said it is a "reward" for residents. Are you kidding me? They have raised our rates every year before this and have some years kept non-residence rates the same. We live here and pay taxes!

Reward the residents??? How about the fact that the township taxes have increased approximately 77 percent since this CRC was built. Wanna reward us??? Decrease the tax rate for those of us who could care less about this center!!

more lap lanes both inside and out would have made a lot of sense. also steam room is available in many rec centers and would provide recovery and therapeutic benefits.

I definitely second expanding the outdoor swimming space. There are a lot of areas for wee ones to play in, but not much actual swimming area for the bigger kids (and a diving board would be fun, too!) An outdoor playground would be a nice addition, as would a sauna, and some racquetball courts would be great, too.

I agree that additional outdoor pool space is needed. A place where the older crowd could spread out to. It is typically very crowded and not much room to move.
