Upper St. Clair commissioners reluctantly voted Monday night to table the ward redistricting plan.

A representative from the Republican Committee of Upper St. Clair asked the commissioners for more time so the committee could examine the township's plan. Randi Bick's main concern was the redistricting of any elected officials, including the committee's newly-elected chair Barbara Lloyd.

Township Manager Matthew Serakowski said he was surprised to learn of the Republican Committee's concerns on Monday night. He said both the Republican and Democrat Committees received the redistricting plan two months ago and no one had expressed any concerns.

Commissioners voted 4-2 to table the vote so the Republican Committee could again meet with township staff to go over the plan. Commissioners Donald Rectenwald Jr. and Mark Christie voted against tabling. Rectenwald said he liked that the proposed plan had very few people having to change polling places.

"We're trying to encourage participation (in voting)," he said.

The vote for the ward redistricting plan is expected to take place during the next commissioners meeting on Jan. 28. However, if the Allegheny County Elections Division needs the information sooner a special meeting will be scheduled before Jan. 28.

Pennsylvania law requires municipalities to make sure wards are equal in population following a census.
