C&RC Membership Nears 10,000

About one third of the Upper St. Clair population belongs to the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park.

After about three and a half years of operation, the Community and Recreation Center of Boyce Mayview Park has more than 9,800 members.

According to statistics shared at the parks and recreation committee meeting on Monday night, 68 percent of members are Upper St. Clair residents and 32 percent are non-residents.

When using the 2010 census statistics, calculations show that 34 percent of the Upper St. Clair population belongs to the C&RC, as of Jan. 2, 2013.

After six months of being open in January 2010, the C&RC had 6,300 members—86 percent were residents and 14 percent were non-residents.

Membership increased to 8,000 members in January 2011, with 78 percent of membership being residents and 23 percent non-residents.

And in January 2013, there were 9,000 members—73 percent residents and 27 non-residents.

More than 400 birthday parties are held at the C&RC each year.

The C&RC is also used for community groups to hold meetings and events at no charge—including the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Odyssey of the Mind, PTA and others.

The C&RC has built a capital reserve with funds. The funds can be used to make small improvements, replace equipment and other maintenance costs in the facility, according to Director of Recreation and Leisure Services Paul Besterman.

Anyone know what the per household tax burden is for USC residents? Or is debt service covered by C&RC revenue?
