Board Working to Update Municipal Playground

The Upper St. Clair Parks and Recreation Board is working on plans to update the Municipal Park.
Because the playground is close to the Upper St. Clair Library and baseball fields, it is one of the most heavily used parks in the township.
Vice chairman of the board Jennifer Schuler and board member Kelly Bakayza have formed a committee to work on the project with the township's Forestry Administrator Gary Schafer.
Bakayza said she would love to bring in playground equipment with a natural look. She also said she would like the equipment to be targeted at a larger age range. Right now the equipment is not made for children above eight years old.
The challenge they're facing is the high cost of playground equipment. Additionally, the board may need to find funds to replace the old, blue water fountain and to update the basketball courts.
The board plans on using its 2011 budget, which is a total of $25,000, on Municipal Park updates. They may also have to plan on using money from their budgets in 2012 and 2013 to complete the project.
The committee will meet again before the next regular parks and recreation board meeting.
The next board meeting is open to the public and will take place in the municipal building on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
